Salzgitter AG subsidiary Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH has opened a new training and communication centre in Germany’s Harz region. The investment is intended to strengthen industrial skills development and give young people better opportunities to train for occupations such as industrial mechanics.

Salzgitter invests in skills as the steel industry transforms

The new centre will offer up to twelve training places each year for industrial mechanics. Other apprenticeship programmes will also be able to use the facility. The building will be brought into operation gradually, allowing current trainees to benefit from the new learning environment step by step.

Focus on skilled workers

According to the company, the aim is to train more qualified specialists in the Harz region. The move comes as the industry faces growing demand for technically skilled staff, especially as the steel sector shifts towards more digitalised and lower-carbon production processes.

“With this investment, we are making an important contribution to future viability and taking responsibility for securing skilled professionals in the Harz region. Well-trained specialists are the foundation for successfully mastering key challenges such as the energy transition and industrial transformation,” said Beatrice Fiege, managing director of human resources at Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH.

The centre will combine practical vocational training with digital learning formats. These include digital training courses and IT training with a clear focus on practical industrial applications.

Part of Salzgitter’s wider transformation

Salzgitter AG is one of Germany’s largest steel groups and is headquartered in Salzgitter, Lower Saxony. The group is active in steel production, steel tubes, trading and industrial technology. Its subsidiary Ilsenburger Grobblech produces heavy plate for sectors including energy, mechanical engineering, construction and offshore applications.

The company also plays a role in Salzgitter’s wider industrial transformation. Through the SALCOS programme, short for Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking, the group is working to gradually reduce carbon emissions from steel production by adopting new processes and using hydrogen.

That development requires new skills. Digital control systems, automation, IT, energy technology and modern process engineering are becoming increasingly important in the steel industry. The new training centre is therefore intended not only to provide basic vocational skills, but also to prepare apprentices for an industry in which production is becoming more digital and technically complex.

- The new centre is an example of the industry’s shift towards greater digitalisation and modern qualifications. It is a key building block in preparing young people as effectively as possible for the demands of tomorrow, said Birgit Dietze, head of human resources at Salzgitter AG.

Industry faces tougher skills shortages

German industrial companies are under growing pressure from a shortage of vocationally trained workers. Large numbers of retirements, intense competition for technical skills and rising demand for digital expertise have led many companies to strengthen their own training programmes.

For Ilsenburger Grobblech, the new centre is also a way to make the company more attractive as an employer. By offering modern on-site training, the company aims to bring young talent closer to industry while contributing to the long-term development of the Harz region.

The investment shows how traditional industrial companies are trying to respond to several challenges at once: technological change, the energy transition and a shortage of qualified labour. For the Salzgitter Group, the training centre is therefore a small but strategically important part of a broader transformation in the European steel industry.
