China is significantly expanding its scientific presence in the Arctic. Over the next four months, four research vessels carrying hundreds of scientists will undertake the country's largest Arctic expedition to date. Alongside climate and oceanographic research, the mission will focus on the geologically unique Gakkel Ridge near the North Pole—an area attracting growing international attention due to its potential mineral resources.
Three icebreaking research vessels—Xuelong, Xuelong 2 and Jidi—departed from the port of Dalian on July 3. A fourth research vessel, Tansuo 3, is expected to join the expedition later. It marks the first time China has deployed four research vessels simultaneously on a single Arctic mission.
Gakkel Ridge at the heart of the mission
One of the expedition's primary objectives is the Gakkel Ridge, an approximately 1,800-kilometre underwater mountain range stretching across the Arctic Ocean between Greenland and the Siberian continental shelf.
The ridge forms the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates and represents the world's slowest-spreading mid-ocean ridge, where new oceanic crust is created at an exceptionally slow rate.
Scientists will investigate how the Arctic seafloor is evolving, examine volcanic activity and analyse geological processes that influence both the regional climate and the future development of the Arctic. The expedition will also deploy the crewed deep-sea submersibles Fendouzhe and Jiaolong to conduct advanced surveys at extreme depths—technology possessed by only a handful of countries.
Science and geopolitics increasingly intertwined
China's Ministry of Natural Resources officially describes the expedition as part of ongoing research into climate change, sea ice, marine ecosystems and the sustainable development of the Arctic.
However, many analysts believe that China's rapidly expanding polar research programme also strengthens the country's long-term strategic position in the region.
As climate change reduces Arctic sea ice, new opportunities are emerging for shipping along the Northern Sea Route as well as for the future exploitation of natural resources. The Arctic is believed to contain substantial reserves of oil, natural gas and critical minerals that could play an important role in the global energy transition.
For several years, China has described itself as a "near-Arctic state" and has steadily expanded its investments in polar research, icebreaking capabilities and international scientific cooperation.
Growing international attention
The new mission follows last year's major Arctic expedition, which was China's largest polar research campaign at the time and attracted considerable attention in both the United States and Europe. This year's programme is even more ambitious and includes scientific cooperation with researchers from Russia and Germany.
China's expanding Arctic presence coincides with growing international interest in the region, where climate change, energy security, emerging shipping routes and geopolitical competition are making the Arctic increasingly important.
The four-month expedition is expected to collect extensive data on ocean currents, sea-ice dynamics, biodiversity and geological processes—research that could have scientific significance far beyond the polar regions.
