Viscaria has agreed to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with Europe’s leading copper producer, Aurubis AG, to negotiate a long-term copper offtake agreement. This partnership strengthens both companies’ market positions and represents a significant contribution to Europe’s copper self-sufficiency, climate transition, and long-term competitiveness. Through this collaboration, stable deliveries of responsibly produced copper will be secured – a critical material for electrification, digitalisation, and the green transition. The agreement also paves the way for continued innovation and growth within the European mining and metals industry.
Viscaria and Aurubis – two key players in the copper industry
Viscaria is a Swedish mining company with the ambition to become a leading European producer of responsibly produced copper. Using innovative solutions and modern mining methods, Viscaria aims to meet the rapidly increasing demand for copper, a crucial material for electrification, digitalisation, and the green transition. Aurubis AG has been Europe’s foremost copper producer for more than a century and holds a globally recognised position in recycling and sustainability. Together, the companies embody expertise, innovation, and long-term responsibility.
Significant scope and long-term flexibility
The planned agreement between Viscaria and Aurubis covers approximately 50 percent of Viscaria’s planned copper production, with deliveries over eight years – from 2028 to 2035 – and with an option to extend. At the same time, Viscaria will retain its flexibility to collaborate with additional customers and adapt to new business opportunities, supporting dynamic and sustainable business development.
Sustainability and climate transition – shared values at the core
Both companies have clear sustainability objectives. Aurubis aims to become carbon-neutral by 2050 and is already a global leader in copper recycling and responsible production. Viscaria views the collaboration as a way to maximise its contribution to sustainable development by supplying high-quality, responsibly produced copper to the European market. With a shared focus on circular flows and reduced environmental impact, the partnership will help accelerate Europe’s transition to renewable energy systems and electrified societies and industries.
Jörgen Olsson, CEO of Viscaria, emphasises the strategic importance of the collaboration:
“Entering a long-term partnership with Europe’s market leader Aurubis demonstrates the strength of our strategy, provides significant support in our financing process, and gives us flexibility in managing our production volumes. The agreement represents recognition of the high quality of the concentrate Viscaria will produce and it is an important step towards establishing a new, significant copper producer in Europe.”
Future opportunities and Europe’s copper supply
Copper is a key raw material for electrification, digitalisation, the defence industry, and the climate transition. Through the collaboration between Viscaria and Aurubis, Europe’s resilience against global supply risks is strengthened, while dependency on imports from regions with less responsible production methods is reduced. The agreement is expected to enable Viscaria to continue investing in modern mining and technology, which in turn can generate new employment opportunities and contribute to local and regional value creation.
The collaboration will therefore not only strengthen Viscaria’s position in the market but will also help reduce Europe’s copper deficit and accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable, circular, and resource-efficient society.
A partnership for the future
Through a long-term collaboration between Viscaria and Aurubis, a new era for European copper production is taking shape. Combining high product quality, strong sustainability ambitions, and operational flexibility makes the partnership a benchmark for the industry. Viscaria looks to the future with confidence and will continue to drive development towards a more climate-smart and competitive Europe, where sustainability and innovation go hand in hand.
