New legislation Kyrgyzstan’s parliament has passed a new law that is to allow the country’s government to impose external management on companies acting under concession agreements. The only project operating under such an agreement in the country is the Kumtor gold mine run by Canadian miner Centerra Gold.

The company said in a statement that Kyrgyz lawmaker Akulbek Jap-arov “is also the Chairman of the Kyrgyz Republic State Commission which was formed in February 2021 to review the activities of the Kumtor Mine and is expected to report its findings shortly.”

The open-pit gold is operated by Kumtor Gold Company, a subsidiary of Centerra Gold.

Based in Toronto, Canada, Centerra Gold says it focused on operat-ing, developing, exploring and acquiring gold properties in North America, Asia and other markets worldwide. The miner operates three mines: the Kumtor mine, the Mount Milligan mine in Canada and, the Öksüt mine in Turkey.
