The Russian Rusal launched the first stage of the Taishet aluminum smelter in the integrated testing mode, which construction was suspended due to the 2008 crisis. The enterprise will become one of the largest projects of the company.

The capacity of the new plant is estimated at 428,500 tons of aluminum per year. The cost of the first stage is 100 billion rubles, of which 45 billion rubles. are the funds of a syndicated loan from VTB (RUB 30 billion) and Gazprombank (RUB 15 billion). After the Boguchansk aluminum smelter, as well as the Khakassk aluminum smelter TaAZ launched in 2006, the Taishet smelter has become the third aluminum smelter built in modern Russia.

The overall volume of investments amounted to 250 billion rubles. The plant will reach its full capacity in 2022.

The plant will be supplied with power from the Boguchansk, Krasnoyarsk and Bratsk HPPs. Rusal CEO Yevgeny Nikitin said that the most environmentally friendly technologies were used during the construction of the factory.

Rusal began construction of the Taishet plant in 2006, but due to low prices for aluminum during the 2008 crisis, it suspended the project. This year the situation changed, as price with delivery in three months on the LME increased by 30.8%, to US$2,590 per ton, and in the third quarter it even exceeded US$3,000.
