Karelia Republic, a region in the Russian north, may become one of the centers of mining in the country within the next several years, that will be also due to its rich mineral reserves, according to recent statements, made by Karelian regional authorities and some local media reports.

As part of these plans, a particular attention will be paid for the development of gold, diamond and platinum fields, which are located within the territory of the region.

Currently the Karelian regional authorities, together with the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation are finishing preparations for the conduction of geological exploration of these fields, which commercial production may begin already this year.

As part of these plans, a particular attention will be paid for the development of Suojärvi gold field, which was discovered in 2016 and, in addition to gold, contains large reserves of silver, platinum, copper and palladium.
